Breaking the Spell

 Words of wisdom from children:

·        Never trust a dog to watch your food.

·        When your dad is angry and he asks you, “Do I look stupid?” don’t answer him.

·        If you want a kitten start out asking for a horse.

·        Never try to baptize a cat.

This Sunday we celebrate the day Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey. He went into the temple and the children shouted ‘Hosanna’. He turned to the chief priests and scribes and asked, “Do you hear what these children are saying?”

This Sunday four young people will be confirmed. Come and hear their words of wisdom.

Matthew 21:1-17

1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, ‘Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.’ 4 This took place to fulfil what was spoken through the prophet:

5 ‘Say to Daughter Zion,

“See, your king comes to you,

gentle and riding on a donkey,

and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”’

6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8 A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

‘Hosanna to the Son of David!’

‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Hosanna in the highest heaven!’

10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, ‘Who is this?’ 11 The crowds answered, ‘This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.’

12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money-changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 ‘It is written,’ he said to them, ‘“My house will be called a house of prayer,” but you are making it “a den of robbers.”’

14 The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David,’ they were indignant.

16 ‘Do you hear what these children are saying?’ they asked him. ‘Yes,’ replied Jesus, ‘have you never read, ‘“From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise”?’ 17 And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night.

Little Deaths

22 March, 2026 Pastor John Strelan

I pulled a muscle in my shoulder on Monday night. At a swing dancing class of all places! (Don’t ask!) Don’t worry, it only hurts when I move. It wouldn’t have happened five years ago. Perhaps it’s a sign I’m getting older? Perhaps it’s a sign of my mortality?

Woah! Hold it right there! Did you see what I did just then? It seems quite a leap from an injured shoulder to dying! But, is it such a leap? Or is it that we don’t want to think about dying? Even when we are surrounded by death everyday. Even when we suffer from ‘little deaths’ all the time. You know those moments that suck a little bit of life out of you?

Our society’s way of dealing with death is to deny it (never mind the irony that we can’t get enough of death on our TV screens!) But, I wonder if by denying death we are missing out on a bit of life? Perhaps a lot of life?

And, I wonder if Jesus’ words to Martha might not be translated: ‘Those who believe in me, even though they are dying, are living’ (John 11:25)?

I wonder.

There but by the grace of God go I

15 March, 2026 Pastor John Strelan

This [see image] is the checker shadow illusion designed by Professor of Neuroscience, Edward Adelson. When you look at the image which is the darker square on the checkerboard, is it A or B?

Well, as you may have guessed (even if your eyes are telling you something different), both squares are exactly the same shade. (Or perhaps you didn’t guess that?) In truth, neither is darker or lighter than the other.

Sometimes even our eyes blind us to reality.
