Earlier this week Pastor Ezra Jin, the leader of one of the largest underground churches in China was released by authorities after spending 266 days in prison. Pastor Jin founded Zion Church in 2007 with 20 members. In 20 years it has grown into a network of 10,000 members across 40 cities. However, many other pastors and other Christians remain imprisoned.

But, despite decades of restrictions, suppression and persecution, the number of Christians in China continues to grow, with numbers currently estimated to be 100 million.

All because a sower went out to sow.

Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23

The parable of the sower

1 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered round him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: ‘A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop – a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.’

18 ‘Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 when anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.’

Talkin’ ‘Bout My Generation

Last Tuesday ‘A Current Affair’ aired a segment that was meant to challenge unrealistic beauty standards. The reporter presenting the program chose not to wear any of the usual make-up a TV presenter would wear. Sadly, but unsurprisingly, she received many on-line responses commenting negatively on her appearance. It seems in this social media driven world anyone with a keyboard thinks they have a God-given right to comment, critique, criticize and condemn. I’m told Lutherans are not immune from this sort of behaviour! It’s all too easy to criticize others, especially anonymously on-line, but I wonder how we would fare if God would critique us? After all, if anyone has a right to do that, it’s God!

Showing Up

28 June, 2026 Pastor John Strelan

The Law of Inertia, also known as Newton’s First Law of Motion, states that an object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an external force. Inertia is the inherent property of any physical object to resist changes to its current state of motion. So, if an object is sitting still, it wants to stay sitting still; if it is already moving it wants to keep moving.

Makes me wonder whether, when it comes to the mission of the church, we have a tendency to overcomplicate things. Perhaps it’s just a matter of showing up?

Turn Your 'I' Upon Jesus

21 June, 2026 Pastor John Strelan

When you look in the mirror do you like what you see? I suspect not. I say that purely based on statistics, not because I know you well enough to make that judgment. You see Australians spend over $25 billion dollars on beauty products every year! Then we spend another $25 billion per year on clothes! In fact, Australians buy more clothes per person than anyone else in the world! And, every year, 200,000 tonnes of the clothing we buy ends up in landfill!

And, in the end, despite all the skin products we apply and all the fashion items we adorn ourselves with we too eventually return to dust. So maybe there is something more important than what we see in the mirror? Maybe there’s something more important than what we think of ourselves? Maybe there’s something more important than what others think of us? And maybe that something is more than skin deep?
