Weddings (Matthew 21:1-14)

Aren’t weddings wonderful? They are an important time for the bride and groom to make a public declaration of their love and commitment to each other. They are also a time to create lasting memories.

Weddings can bring out the best and also the worst in people. Unfortunately, many of us have experienced wedding disasters or faux pas, and not just the bridegroom forgetting the wedding rings.

Have you ever experienced a situation when invited guests have not bothered or refused to attend a wedding feast? In today’s Gospel, a king had planned an A-lister event to celebrate his son’s wedding and still none of those invited turned up. The king then opens the invitation up to everyone his servants could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

This parable shows the immense generosity of the king, of our heavenly Father. Even the rejection of His offer does not stop the Father from sending out His invitation again and again. We can all rejoice in receiving His good gifts of forgiveness, and life, and salvation.

Matthew 22:1-14

Parable of the wedding

1  Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: 2 ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. 3 He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.

4 ‘Then he sent some more servants and said, “Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.”

5 ‘But they paid no attention and went off – one to his field, another to his business. 6 The rest seized his servants, ill-treated them and killed them. 7 The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.

8 ‘Then he said to his servants, “The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. 9 So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.” 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11 ‘But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 He asked, “How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?” The man was speechless.

13 ‘Then the king told the attendants, “Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

14 ‘For many are invited, but few are chosen.’

The right kind of confidence

4 October, 2026 Pastor Dale Gosden

Self-confidence mostly seems to be a good thing. Unless, of course, your confidence is completely misguided. The Apostle Paul had his spiritual self-confidence smashed to pieces by the risen Lord Jesus, and it was something for which Paul was forever thankful. Now, this wasn't a case of Jesus cutting down tall poppies. Instead, he wants to cut out any self-righteousness in all of us - the sort of spiritual self-confidence that pushes God away and keeps us focussed on ourselves. It's like waking up from chasing 'fool's gold' and discovering that Jesus is the true treasure right on our doorstep. There's no going back.

Responding to God

27 September, 2026 Tim Foulkes

Our responses to different situations tell a lot about us. Some people are good in a crisis, they respond rapidly in the midst of stressful situations where others might freeze. Some people respond slowly, and I have just as much respect - if not more! - for people who have the presence of mind to wait patiently until they have the right thing to say or do. How we respond to God is another situation again. When God lays something on us that requires a change of heart how do we respond?

Change of any kind is always unsettling but being unsettled isn’t always unwelcome. Sometimes responding to God requires us to change our minds and sometimes that change turns out to be what we were looking for the whole time.

One of Us?

20 September, 2026 Pastor John Strelan

A one hit wonder.

That’s what we call an artist whose star flamed brightly for a brief moment and then lapsed into obscurity. One such artist is Joan Osborne. Back in 1995 she had a massive hit song (#1 in Australia, #4 in America) titled ‘One of Us’. It’s got a crunchy little distorted guitar riff and some pretty ordinary rhymes, but not the usual lyrics for a hit pop song. Osbourne sings:

What if God was one of us

Just a slob like one of us

Just a stranger on the bus

Trying to make his way home?

That’s not a bad question, even for Lutherans who believe that God was one of us. But, how much humanness will we allow God to have? Will we allow God to be ‘a slob like one of us’? Or, would we rather keep him at arm’s length, safe in heaven?

This is one hit that makes me wonder.
